Well that time is here, Vista release day is here! What are you going to do stand in line to get it? (Okay it isn’t on a par with Lord of the Rings but it sounded good.) Or are you one of the many that is is going to sit back and watch and see what happens? I have heard from many that they plan to keep running their old XP and let the rest of the world work out the bugs that are sure to be introduced today.
Myself I have tried the beta’s and see nothing that will get me running to the local software provider to get a full copy. Why spend a lot of money for a OS that will require me to update my hardware as well as the software just to run it at it’s full potential? Why go ape over features that Linux and Mac has had for years? And in true Microsoft tradition they have added these features with more more bloat that could have ever been dreamed of by the everyday user.
And yes I watched Bill on the Daily Show last night and it was a good laugh watching John attempt to social engineer Billy’s password out of him but I will bet that is the last laugh a lot of folks will have once they install Vista on their computers. So the bottom line is I will sit back and run my systems with Linux and my one Game/Test Box with XP and leave my world in a little less chaos and see what it is like in another 6 months or a year and then if I have to maybe I will switch then, maybe.

Browser usage numbers for 2006 are beginning to appear on the Web, and for the first time in many moons the market share of Microsoft’s dominant offering, Internet Explorer, has dipped below 80 percent. While Internet Explorer’s star was sinking, its chief competitor’s, Mozilla Firefox, was ascending. Its market share climbed from 9.50 percent in January 2006 to 14 percent in December — just about the time version 2.0 of the browser was released.

We’ve passed the halfway point in this series of articles on podcasting with open source tools. From the value of podcasts, to a summary of the available open source podcasting-friendly tools, to a detailed look at both Audacity and normalize, we’ve covered a fair amount of ground. I hope you’ve found the information useful to this point. We’ve picked our way through some of the minefields of the tools, and exposed some hidden process gotchas. We’ve also talked about the importance of sound quality, even in a podcast intended to emphasize its DIY roots.

{mosimage}Rumors of a full-on switch from AMD to Intel chips have forced Google to emerge from its warm, creepy secrecy cocoon. Contrary to claims from Intel, Google has not experienced Xeonmania and elevated Intel to favored supplier status. Rather, it’s just got a few Xeons laying around its data centers.
“We bought a small number of chips from Intel recently, but we continue to be supplied by more than one vendor,” spokesman Barry Schnitt told us in a statement and then returned to his cocoon.
Google’s displeasure with Intel’s blog gossip making its way to the press is evident in the company’s terse statement. Such PR rumblings between the two companies are sure to make things uncomfortable next time Intel CEO Paul Otellini shows up for a Google board meeting.

Morgantown, WV, Jan 24, 2007 — MEPIS has announced Beta4 of SimplyMEPIS-32 and SimplyMEPIS-64 Version 6.0-4. This release introduces several improvements in wireless support and the introduction of MEPIS live on a USB key.
Warren Woodford of MEPIS reports “A big change is in the kernel. Updating to 2.6.17-20 is a lot more difficult than it sounds. MEPIS is meant for everybody, not just the Linux users on the bleeding edge. The fact is, kernels after 2.6.16 have introduced many changes that are good for some, but that break the system for others. We’ve stuck with 2.6.15 because it’s stable and works with the packages already in the MEPIS and Dapper package pools.”
“But we had reports of problems with wireless support, especially with Centrino wireless chips. So we’ve updated the Intel drivers and improved some of the network configuration options. I’m happy to report that we are getting feedback from users that wireless, especially with wpa, is working the best ever.”

An anonymous reader writes “Google organized a flyover of Sydney, Australia last Friday for Australia Day. The images taken on the day will be posted to Google Maps in a few weeks. A number of dotcoms spent hours making huge signs that would be visible from the air. It will be interesting to see whether Google will repeat the event in other cities. If they do, get prepared early. What sign would you make?”
Proof that there is a Australia Day. For the Moron that mailed me and said I made it up last week, Baldy
