Tips and Tricks for Linux Admins: Keep an Eye On Your Servers

February 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Today’s networking grab-bag contains iftop, ApacheTop, and sysctl. iftop is a nice realtime bandwidth monitor, ApacheTop is an almost real-time Apache monitor, and sysctl is used to control hundreds of kernel parameters in a most elite fashion. sysctl comes with all Linux distributions, and iftop and ApacheTop are just a Yum install or apt-get install away.

Early word: Firefox 3.0 to open door to Web apps

February 28th, 2007 by Baldy

If the Firefox browser were a car, it would be in the garage right now being souped up by an anxious group of gearheads. When Firefox 3.0 is released later this year, the open-source browser is likely to contain a host of new features, including offline support for Web applications and new bookmark and search features. Mozilla released the second alpha version of Firefox 3.0 earlier this month.

Dell Puts Preinstalled Linux on the Table

February 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Dell’s new IdeaStorm Web site, which invites the public to post ideas and product suggestions to Dell, has exploded with interest in desktop Linux. Thousands of site community members have asked Dell to preinstall several different versions of Linux on desktop and laptop computers, prompting Dell to take steps toward definitive action. The company, however, stopped short of promising to deliver Linux preinstalled on desktops and laptops.

Still short of what the users really want not just a Novell system afterall there are other distros out there, Baldy

Open Source: The Only Software One Really Owns

February 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Along with health, wealth and happiness, freedom seems to be the most cherished human commodity, yet there are still corners of the software world that insist on denying it to their customers. Despite open source technology outshining the proprietary world of Microsoft for more than a decade, it seems that some customers still like to be controlled by their suppliers. Maybe it’s a sadomasochistic thing, or the warm glow of reassurance that monolithic suppliers like Microsoft know what’s best for us, allowing us to relinquish control for an easy life.

Dell Listens, Not

February 27th, 2007 by LinuxChick

Dell Listens, Not

Well the first thing out of the Dell camp in answer to the requests for Linux machines, is the announcement that all Novell Products will be now available on Dell computers. Now is this a surprise? I think not. Years ago Dell had started a linux option for it’s customers and Microsoft jumped in ans said if you want to sell our Windows then forget the linux, and they folded and linux was ignored. Well fast forward a few years and now that Billyware and Novell have signed on as best buddies, Dell is allowed to offer all Novell products as a linux solution for their users. Now is this good or bad for linux in general, I have to say no, the user is still made to decide between only 2 options and not the many that Linux has to offer. Will this offer have a positive effect on the linux world? I hope that after some of the converts will start to learn that linux is a viable option and maybe learn that there are more distros available to them and then they will grow from there. I will cross my fingers that this is a step in the right direction, however they are not real tight. I will try and keep up with this debate and see what comes of it in the long run before I say it really is good for linux though.

Connect OpenOffice.org to MySQL

February 27th, 2007 by LinuxChick

One of the good things about OpenOffice.org is its ability to use different database engines. Just give it the right driver, and OpenOffice.org can connect to virtually any database system, including MySQL. However, deciding what database driver to use and configuring a connection between MySQL and OpenOffice.org can be a bit tricky. Let’s walk through the process.
