4 GB May Be Vista’s RAM Sweet Spot

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

jcatcw writes “David Short, an IBM consultant who works in the Global Services Division and has been beta testing Vista for two years, says users should consider 4GB of RAM if they really want optimum Vista performance. With Vista’s minimum requirement of 512MB of RAM, Vista will deliver performance that’s ’sub-XP,’ he says. (Dell and others recommend 2GB.) One reason: SuperFetch, which fetches applications and data, and feeds them into RAM to make them accessible more quickly. More RAM means more caching.”

Jeesh I only have two machines that are capable of running that much ram let alone installed on them. More proof that Linux is the right way to go these days, Baldy

Setting up a serial console

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

This tutorial will show you how to set up a serial console on a Linux system, and connect to it via a null modem cable. This is quite useful if your Linux server is in a headless configuration (no keyboard or monitor), as it allows you to easily get a console on the system if there are any problems with it (especially network problems, when SSH is not available). In the end, the GRUB menu will appear over the serial link, as will the bootup messages (output when booting the system). I’m using Debian Etch on the server and Ubuntu Edgy on my client, although this should work on any Linux distribution.

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

WASHINGTON — The first time Warner Music Group took a run at British rival EMI Group PLC, satellite radio was in its infancy and the iPod was a secret prototype in Apple Inc.’s labs.

Six years and repeated rebuffs later, Warner Music confirmed Tuesday that it is “in the preliminary stages” of making yet another takeover bid for London-based EMI — a move analysts said is aimed at coping with the uncertainty of selling music in the age of digital downloads.
