Four of the province’s largest centres will be connected to the network once it’s launched this spring. We look at the capital costs, the rollout plan and the challenges ahead

The Saskatchewan government announced Monday its plans to create what it called the country’s largest wireless Internet network, which will allow the province’s four largest cities’ residents and visitors to access free-of-charge Wi-Fi in the downtown core and post-secondary institutions.

Krugle offers code search engine for open source, with open source

February 27th, 2007 by Baldy

With the rise in popularity of open source software, developers don’t need to start from scratch when coding new software. Instead, they can use specialized search engines that crawl repositories to find the perfect code snippet. Now, one entrepreneurial open source developer has built a business that expands on the basic code search engine, and in true hacker recursive style, finds his company relying on the very tool it exists to create.

Xara LX forked to replace rendering engine

February 27th, 2007 by Baldy

The Xara LX vector graphics editor took a big step forward last week. After months of gridlock between open source contributors to the project and its corporate owners, one of the contributors published his own fork of the code base — and the company approved, offering to host it in the official Subversion repository.

Extensions Help Boost Firefox’s Attractiveness

February 27th, 2007 by Baldy

The Firefox Web browser is more than a navigator — it’s a veritable online ecosystem that is continually expanding and evolving. This is largely due to software plug-ins called “extensions” that turbocharge Firefox with additional capabilities. I have access to hundreds of the modules, which typically work on both PCs and Macs, and I use several of them daily. More extensions are continually being developed and released to the public, usually for free. I wrote about Firefox last year, but I’m taking a closer look at extensions.

Note to new Linux users: No antivirus needed

February 26th, 2007 by Baldy

One of the most common questions I hear new Linux users ask is “What program should I use for virus protection?” Many of them lose faith in me as a source of security information when I reply, “None.” But you really don’t need to fear malware on your new platform, thanks to the way Linux is built.

Savvy Windows users have to watch their virus checkers as closely as the head nurse in the ICU keeps an eye on patient monitors. Often, the buzz in the Windows security world is about which protection-for-profit firm was the first to discover and offer protection for the malware du jour — or should I say malware de l’heure? The only thing better than having backed the winning Super Bowl team come Monday morning at the office coffeepot is having the virus checker you use be the one winning the malware sweepstakes that weekend.

If a rogue program finds a crack in your Windows armor, paying $200 per infection to have your machine scrubbed and sanitized by the local goon^H^H^H^H geek squad not only helps to reinforce the notion that you have to have malware protection, but that it has to be the right protection, too. The malware firms are aware of this, and all of their advertising plays upon the insecurity fears of Windows users and the paranoia that results. Chronic exposure and vulnerability to malware has conditioned Windows users to accept this security tax.

Award-Winning Ad Taken Off Air In Australia

February 26th, 2007 by Baldy

bol_kernal writes “An award-winning advertisement on Australian TV for the new Hyundai 4WD has been pulled from being broadcast after stations received 80 complaints from concerned parents. The ad consists of a small child, age around 2 years, cruising down the road, window down, arm out the window, in his new Hyundai 4WD. He sees a girl of the same age standing on the side of the road, pulls over picks her up, and they go to the beach together. All in all it’s cute, funny, and very well done. The ad aired late in the evening (8:30 pm or later), but it was pulled due to concern from parents about the copycat risk. What I want to know is, where has the responsibility of parents gone? Is the world becoming so serious — or so frightened — that fantasy is no longer allowed?”

Japan’s Turbolinux began shipping its Wizpy digital media devices on Friday. The Flash-based, USB device includes a version of the Linux operating system that can be used to run the open source OS on nearly any computer. According to Turbolinux, the idea behind the device is “to turn all the world’s computer[s] into your PC.” Currently only available in Japan, the Linux embedded, portable USB bootable device, which also doubles as a digital audio player, will make its way to store shelves around the world in the coming months.
