The Red Hat-sponsored Fedora project is undergoing several changes before the release of its next version. In preparation for Fedora 7, which will fuse the Core and Extra software repositories, Fedora’s developers are auditing the repositories for non-free and non-open software that doesn’t meet the project’s guidelines. Eventually, the project may change its package guidelines to only allow Free Software.

One of the most common security challenges Linux and Unix IT administrators face is how to effectively manage the root or super-user account. In an age of regulatory compliance and data privacy laws — and as more and more organizations elect to run mission-critical financial, customer relationship management, supply chain management and other applications in heterogeneous Unix and Linux environments — controlling and auditing privileged account access is more crucial than ever.

In the opening piece of the “Attack of the Pod Penguins” series, I mentioned my friend Justin, the carpenter. In his line of work as a builder, he carries a tool belt containing everything he’ll need to complete a job – hammer, nails, speed square, tape measure, pencil and a load of other assorted hand tools. The podcasting tool belt isn’t so different from that worn and shiny fold of leather slapping against Justin’s hip. The point is to provide every tool you’ll need to complete the podcasting job.

It was hard to believe, but early Saturday morning my kids snuck downstairs, grabbed my laptop out of the bag and started using it for fun and games. What was more surprising was the fact that they chose my laptop running Fedora, rather than the family PC running Windows with all of the kids games and edutainment packages
When I asked my son why he had snatched my laptop instead of using the family PC, he replied without hesitation: “Because Linux is better.”

Introduction
I have switched to Xubuntu a few months ago coming from Kubuntu. In Kubuntu I liked the (already available) option of setting up a list of image files and have them randomly displayed as background image on the desktop. This was one of the things I have missed so far in Xfce.
