Is Ubuntu Linux Slowly Dying?

March 9th, 2007 by Baldy

All right! I’ve waited four hours for LXer to pick up this link, and I just ran out of patience. Every time one of Debian’s typical little developer spats pushes it’s way int the public…

Microsoft’s Standards Beef: Enjoy the Geek Show

March 9th, 2007 by Baldy

For pure entertainment value, the best show in the IT business today is Microsoft. There are lawsuits, like the one in Iowa that was just settled — though not before it turned up a memo from Windows guru Jim Allchin saying he preferred a Macintosh. There are Vista snafus, like the critical security hole in Vista’s anti-malware system. There’s clumsy astroturfing, like Microsoft’s failed try at rewriting Wikipedia. There was an “open letter” from Microsoft complaining that IBM is stifling user choice by slowing down standardization of Office 2007′s document format.

Google, Yahoo Accused of Aiding China Censorship

March 9th, 2007 by Baldy

The cofounder of Wikipedia, a free- and open-content online encyclopedia edited by volunteers, on Thursday criticized major Internet firms such as Yahoo and Google for allegedly helping China exercise political censorship. Jimmy Wales, chairman emeritus of the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, said Yahoo and Google “cooperate in terms of censoring” in China. He has been “very critical of that,” he said in a dinner at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo.

Ontario Net firm gets $160-million backing

March 9th, 2007 by LinuxChick

A private equity player in the United States has made one of the biggest bets yet on the Internet, with a $160-million investment in a little-known new-media firm in Ontario’s Waterloo region.

American Capital Strategies Ltd. wants to build an online media powerhouse through the minority equity stake it acquired this week in Geosign Group of Companies, a firm in Guelph. Geosign has quietly built a network of 180 websites offering consumers information on topics ranging from bed linen and fitness to insurance and cosmetic surgery.

This is the largest single private equity deal in Canada, in the Internet space, in the last four years,” said Iain Klugman, president of Communitech, an industry group representing tech companies in the region.

Review: SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC1

March 9th, 2007 by LinuxChick

Release Candidate 1 of SimplyMEPIS 6.5 has just been released and since I was planning on reviewing beta 7, I figured I might as well download RC1 before doing my official review. I am using the 64-bit version on my desktop.

…..

Final Thoughts

I plan on installing MEPIS to my hard disk once the final version of 6.5 is out. Once I do that I’ll write another review with the full install process documented. For now I must say that I’m very impressed with SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC1. It is definitely a very well put together distribution and the fact that it gave me the option right from the boot loader to use the Nvidia drivers was a very nice touch.

Morgantown, WV, Mar 7, 2007 — RC1 of SimplyMEPIS 32 and 64 is available for testing. This release adds an improved MEPIS Network Assistant, the latest Alsa sound drivers, and numerous minor fixes.
