K3b enters new era with approaching 1.0 release

March 10th, 2007 by Baldy

One of free software’s premier applications, KDE’s CD and DVD burning suite K3b, is about to hit the big 1-0. This milestone touts rewritten DVD video ripping and a refocused interface design. The new release represents a level of feature-completeness and stability that surpasses all previous K3b releases and, perhaps, all free software competitors.

Are Linux Systems Ready for Daylight Saving Time?

March 10th, 2007 by Baldy

Billed as a “mini-Y2K,” this weekend could produce myriad horrors, if you believe broadcasters’ reports. Hospitals could incorrectly dispense medications. On Monday, conference rooms could be overrun by workers arriving for a meeting scheduled an hour earlier. Financial transactions could be delayed disrupting an already skittish economy. The reason for the uproar? For the first time since it was originally enacted by Congress in 1917, daylight saving time will begin two weeks earlier than usual.

Scientists say nerves use sound, not electricity

March 10th, 2007 by LinuxChick

The common view that nerves transmit impulses through electricity is wrong and they really transmit sound, according to a team of Danish scientists.

The Copenhagen University researchers argue that biology and medical textbooks that say nerves relay electrical impulses from the brain to the rest of the body are incorrect.

“For us as physicists, this cannot be the explanation,” said Thomas Heimburg, an associate professor at the university’s Niels Bohr Institute. “The physical laws of thermodynamics tell us that electrical impulses must produce heat as they travel along the nerve, but experiments find that no such heat is produced.”

AMD facing challenging 2007 after gangbusters gains at Intel’s expense

March 10th, 2007 by LinuxChick

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – The high-flying Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of 2006 has given way to a company in financial peril, saddled with debt and bleeding from a brutal price battle with its larger and suddenly resurgent Silicon Valley archrival, Intel Corp.

AMD finds itself the subject of rumours of a possible takeover or private-equity cash infusion. While it wasn’t long ago that AMD was stealing a big slice of the microprocessor market and emerging as a long-term threat to Intel, those very gains may have left AMD’s well running dry.

Though the price competition has cut into both chip makers’ profits, Wall Street has punished AMD’s stock particularly hard.

Virtual family fun with Famster

March 10th, 2007 by LinuxChick

A home for family networking on the Web
CNET News.com’s Neha Tiwari takes a hands-on approach to Famster.com, a new closed-networking site that aims to create a place where families can connect. The site has photo/video uploads, avatars, recipe books, blogs and more, plus security features like a new IM feature that makes it possible for kids to surf the Web safely. Is Famster strengthening family ties or just another social-networking site?

I took a quick look around famster.com I’m not that keen on “social-networking” sites, but it looks pretty good. Check out the features, they seem to have it all, blogs, photo albums, streaming videos, maps, calanders, scrap books, file storage, recipie books and you can create your family tree, with photos of course. ~LC
