Terra Soft’s Yellow Dog Linux: Taking a Power Position

March 21st, 2007 by Baldy

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 by Terra Soft Solutions may not yet have the name recognition of Red Hat Linux, Novell Suse Linux or relative newcomer Ubuntu Linux by Canonical, but it is already well-established as an OS provider to some of the biggest names in the Power Architecture computing industry. Terra Soft Solutions showcased its Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 for the Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 3 at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last month.

Microsoft probes possible Xbox Live fraud

March 21st, 2007 by LinuxChick

The investigation comes after gamers reported having their Xbox Live accounts hijacked and their credit cards used to buy “Microsoft Points,” the virtual currency on Xbox Live, which has more than 6 million users.

“Recently, there have been reports of fraudulent activity and account theft taking place on the Xbox Live network,” a Microsoft representative said in a statement provided to CNET News.com. “Security is a top priority for Xbox Live, and we are actively investigating all reports of fraudulent behavior and theft.”

Gamers have been reporting the incidents for some time in online forums–including on Xbox.com–and to Microsoft’s Xbox help desk. Many users of the Microsoft console have been frustrated with the software giant’s response to date.

“My Xbox Live account was hacked and all credit card info was stolen and used to run up points…Microsoft says: ‘Oh, well, better call your credit card companies, nothing we can do,’” one user wrote on the Xbox Web site last month.

Skype to offer money-transfer system via PayPal

March 21st, 2007 by LinuxChick

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) – Web telephone calling service Skype will shortly begin allowing users to send money to other Skype users via the PayPal online payments system, Skype co-founder Niklas Zennstrom said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a technology conference in Silicon Valley, Skype Chief Executive Zennstrom said the company is working with PayPal, but declined to say exactly when the service would be made available to Skype’s tens of millions of global users.

Both Skype and PayPal are units of online auction leader eBay Inc.. PayPal is already the most popular way that Skype users pay for long-distance Skype phone calls to other phones.

“You can send money over Skype,” Zennstrom said of the upcoming service plan. “This is basically connecting the Skype community over PayPal. All the user needs is a PayPal account.”

A Skype spokesman said following Zennstrom’s remarks that the service should be formally unveiled within a month.

Skype had 171 million registered users worldwide at the end of 2006. A year ago, PayPal began limited experiments allowing users to send money to other cell phone users via text messages, but has done little to promote that service so far.

Skype-PayPal can function as a money transfer service for transactions as simple as sending a friend money to split a restaurant bill.

“A lot of people using Skype are people who have friends and family on the other side of the world,” Zennstrom said.

Kino is one of the better free software video editors for Linux, but it isn’t always intuitive. Consider such common tasks as adding titles and graphics to a clip. The best approach isn’t obvious. After a little exploring, I figured out good ways to…

Sabayon Linux 3.3

March 21st, 2007 by LinuxChick

March 19th, 2007 by james @ triedit.org

Hot on the heels of my PCLinuxOS review I decided to take a look at another distribution that aims to be simple to use yet powerful. Sabayon Linux aims to give users all the bleeding edge software of SimplyMEPIS and PCLinuxOS but is based on Gentoo and uses Portage as its package management system. I haven’t used Gentoo for a couple of years now, but Sabayon’s popularity is continually increasing and with a new release it’s now time to give it a try.

What is Sabayon Linux?

Sabayon Linux is a distribution based on Gentoo that uses the Portage system. It has all the latest and great 3D desktop features and desktop software that all the modern Linux distributions have.

From Sabayon’s website:

A lot of you asked, what Sabayon Linux could offer in particular? And I’m proud to answer “all the bleeding edge technologies” that every day hit the Linux arena, without exceptions, without politically driven ideas. The best, will be in, from extraordinary Multimedia features through the most advanced Wireless support thanks to the inclusion of the new DeviceScape wireless stack to Beryl, our official 3D technologies partner. So, are you really ready for all this? We hope so!
