In the last installment of this series I showed how to quickly mount a shared folder on a Windows Vista machine from a Linux machine (specifically, from one running Ubuntu 6.10). This solution works if you just want to read files on the Vista PC and you don’t mind re-entering the mount command the next time you reboot your Linux PC. Less than two months after Apple chief executive Steve Jobs challenged record labels to stop insisting on “digital rights management” copy restrictions, one of the major record labels took him up on the invitation. This morning, EMI Music announced that it would allow customers to buy music off Apple’s iTunes Store–and later, other music stores–without any “DRM” encumbrances, and in a higher-quality format than before.

Paragon Software Group announced that it has released Paragon NTFS for Linux 6.0, the latest in its family of software. The products purpose is to provide reliable, rapid and transparent read/write access to NTFS volumes under Linux. Among the new improvements and features in this release are complete support for 64 bit CPU architecture, Windows Vista NTFS file system, the latest Linux kernel and also includes performance enhancements.

As the cost of equipping classrooms with everything from chalk to chairs continues to escalate, many school districts are turning to open source solutions as a viable alternative to expensive software for in-class computers. School IT managers are discovering not only that Linux-based distributions a great way to save money, but also that allowing users access to the software’s underlying source code may introduce students to technical aptitude they didn’t know they had.
