OpenOffice.org Calc functions, part 2: Working with formulas

A formula is a spreadsheet function entered in a cell, complete with its arguments. They’re one of the two or three major applications that first spearheaded the acceptance of the personal computer in the 1980s, and the main tools of advanced spreadsheet use.

In part 1 of this article, I gave an overview of functions and what they do. Now, in part 2, I’ll continue by explaining how you enter formulas (or formulae, if you prefer), and how you can check and review them afterwards.

Entering Formulas

You can enter function formulas in several ways.

The quickest way to enter a function formula is to start typing, either in the cell itself, or at the input line. If you are typing in the cell, as soon as you type an operator, such as an equal sign or less than sign ( Options -> OpenOffice.org Calc -> View -> Display. Unselect the check box beside it, and the result will display. However, you can still see the formula in the formula bar field.

Adobe poised to take media player market from Microsoft

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, two announcements, one from Microsoft and the other from Adobe, has marked the beginning of a war over what technology consumers will user to play back videos on their computers. This is a war that will be difficult for Microsoft to win.

n a nutshell, Adobe intends to take its ubiquitous Flash technology widely used to play video in web browsers and enable users to download videos to a Flash player on their desktops. What’s more the desktop player will provide superior quality video to what users are currently gettting in their browsers, including full screen video.

But wait there’s more! The new Adobe Media Player, currently on show at the NAB 2007 expo, will enable content producers to embed advertising in downloaded videos, thus enabling them to monetize and protect the value of copyrighted content.

Microsoft Throws Firefox a Bone

Microsoft released a new Windows Media Player plug-in for the Firefox 2.0 open source Web browser Monday via its Port 25 blog. The official plug-in is one of several Microsoft is developing at its Port 25 Open Source Software Lab, according to the company. “I am very proud to announce that we have released another official Microsoft plug-in,” said Hank Janssen, program manager for Port 25. “It shows another level of interoperability and eagerness in working with the community to get this released.”
