Lightning is a fairly new development. Its first public release was in early 2006. However, being based off of the same backend code as Mozilla Sunbird™, it is maturing quickly.
Lightning is tightly integrated with Thunderbird, allowing it to easily perform email-related calendaring tasks.

No matter which Linux distro you run, chances are it came with a magnificent little image editor called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). Unlike Paint and other free-with-your-OS image editors, GIMP is a full featured graphics app with a broad range of capabilities that rival those os Adobe Photoshop. (Note: GIMP does lack many features of its $749 rival, but it has the distinct advantage of costing absolutely nothing.) In this, our first of several posts about this powerful Linux app, we’ll give you a quick-and-dirty intro to GIMP’s most basic features. Note that there are multiple ways to accomplish these basic tasks in GIMP, but these methods require the fewest steps. In later tutorials, we’ll show you more advanced (and more efficient) image editing techniques.

Dolphin is a file manager for KDE focusing on usability. The main features of Dolphin are:
* Navigation bar for URLs, which allows to navigate quickly through the file hierarchy.
* View properties are remembered for each folder.
* Split of views is supported.
* Network transparency.
* Undo/redo functionality.
* Renaming of a variable number of selected items in one step.
Dolphin is not intended to be a competitor to Konqueror: Konqueror acts as universal viewer being able to show HTML pages, text documents, directories and a lot more, whereas Dolphin focuses on being only a file manager. This approach allows to optimize the user interface for the task of file management.
The KDE 3 version of Dolphin is in beta stage, but provides already most features for daily usage. Currently Dolphin gets ported for KDE 4.0.

Trolltech will provide free phones and SDKs (software development kits) to developers willing to target its Qtopia application development framework for mobile phones. The Qtopia Greenphone Grant Program will provide an unspecified number of awardees with Qtopia SDKs, along with Trolltech’s open, Linux-based Greenphone target device.
Developers can apply through August 7 — or until allocated devices run out — simply by describing the application(s) they wish to develop. Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of functionality, practical use, and originality, Trolltech said.
The grant program aims to help developers interested in applications based on Trolltech’s Qtopia Phone Edition (QPE) software platform. Among the more popular Linux stacks for mobile phones, the dual-licensed QPE stack includes a lightweight graphics framework, along with a suite of customizable applications such as dialers and addressbooks.
Trolltech’s Greenphone, which was announced nearly a year ago, shipped in September. The first Linux-based GSM/GPRS phone to feature an open, user-modifiable OS, Greenphone is positioned as a development target, rather than a consumer device.
Further details can be found on Trolltech’s developer website, here.

If you want feedback on the contents of your Web site, let your visitors rate your pages. Some content management systems include this functionality by default, but if yours doesn’t, you can add rating capabilities with AJAX Star Rater, a PHP/MySQL application that allows you to display AJAX-ified star rating bars on any Web page.
(And here I thought that by watching the hits and return visitors you got a idea of what the visitors thought of your page, Baldy)

While podcasting and video blogging are all the rage, many people still prefer the simplicity of the typed word for expressing themselves online — that is, a blog. However, popular blogging platforms like WordPress and Movable Type can be tough to configure and maintain. On the other hand, you might not want to use an online service like Blogger or TypePad because you want complete control over your blog. If you’re not afraid of the command line, take a peek at Bash Blogger. As its name implies, this application is a bash script that automates all of your blogging tasks (aside from writing, of course).
