Palm has introduced a new class of mobile device that runs Linux. The Foleo “mobile companion” is intended to expand the email, Internet, and productivity capabilities of mobile phones such as the Palm Treo, by adding a full-size keyboard and a larger screen.

Canonical’s Ubuntu development team today released the first alpha forerunner of Ubuntu 7.10, nicknamed “Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1.” The new release — for all Ubuntu variants — sports a cutting-edge 2.6.22 kernel, team spokesperson Martin Pitt said.
“Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 … will in time become Ubuntu 7.10,” Pitt said. “Tribe 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Gutsy development cycle. The primary changes from Feisty have been the re-merging of changes from Debian.”
Use of Gutsy pre-releases are not encouraged for anyone needing a stable system, or anyone who is uncomfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage, a team spokesperson warned in the release announcement. The previews are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs, he added.
Key features in this alpha edition, according to the team, include:

* Postfix 2.4.3 mail agent
* X.org 7.2 window manager
* Python 2.5.1 programming platform
