Tutorial: Power Saving for the Workstation, Part 1

July 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Ordinarily, the only place you see these programs are in laptops and the methods should work on laptops, and there are many places to go for information on the specialized laptop tweaks and GNOME and KDE laptop configuration options. But in an age of global warming and increasing costs per KWh, saving power on workstations by putting them to sleep when not in active use is a good idea, too.

So You Want to Be a Linux Developer, Part 2

July 28th, 2007 by Baldy

The continuing rise in popularity of Linux applications has become a boon to job opportunities for software programmers. However, the working culture of the open source industry is different from that of proprietary software developers. Code writers looking for a job as Linux developers need a unique set of job skills and work ethics often not demanded by employers of traditional software developers. Even educational degrees take a back seat to hands-on experience with an open source community and a track record of communication ability and leadership.

July 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Those wanting to perform serious graphics tasks on their Linux desktops may benefit from a new book by Michael J. Hammel’s, coming soon from No Starch Press. The Artist’s Guide To GIMP Effects is a four-color tome said to “harness all of the GIMP’s powerful features.”

Jeeesh I know a couple of new converts to the Gimp that would love this little rascal. Looks like I have a list started for Christmas already,Baldy.

Tux Goes to Elementary School

July 27th, 2007 by LinuxChick

It’s common knowledge that getting kids excited about computers and technology is the best way to get them excited about learning.

Kiddix Computing has come up with a Linux-based operating system designed especially for children aged 5-10. All of the icons for applications are situated around the edge of the desktop. There’s e-mail, a browser, an office suite, a paint program and some games (both educational and just plain fun).

You can test it out with a Flash demo at Kiddix’s site.

A Little Linux History.. “Linux: The 0.01 Release”

July 27th, 2007 by LinuxChick

“This is a free minix-like kernel for i386(+) based AT-machines,” began the Linux version 0.01 release notes in September of 1991 for the first release of the Linux kernel.

Very interesting read, for those of us that weren’t “there” in the beginning ;)

This article shows how you can use an iPod on a Linux desktop with Amarok. It covers how you can upload MP3 files from your desktop to your iPod, download MP3 files from your iPod to your desktop, and how you can delete files on the iPod. Dell to offer more Linux PCs, Ubuntu’s creator says

July 27th, 2007 by LinuxChick

Dell will soon offer more personal computers that use the Linux operating system as opposed to Microsoft Windows, said the founder of a company that offers Linux support services.

Mark Shuttleworth, who created the Ubuntu version of Linux and founded Canonical to provide support for it, said that Dell is happy with the demand it has seen for Linux PCs, which Dell introduced in May.

Dell, the world’s second-largest PC maker after Hewlett-Packard, now offers five consumer PCs that run Ubuntu Linux.

“What’s been announced to date is not the full extent of what we will see over the next couple of weeks and months,” Shuttleworth said this week in an interview. “There are additional offerings in the pipeline.”

Ingimp’s tools may improve FOSS usability

July 27th, 2007 by Baldy

Since May, ingimp, a modified version of the GIMP, has collected daily logs on what users do with the program in the hope of improving its usability. The richness of this data is unprecedented, yet improving the GIMP is only a sideshow for the project. What ingimp is really designed to do, according to the project’s leader, is develop the software and practices to put free and open source software (FOSS) usability testing on a professional footing “without placing an undue burden on either the developers or users.”

So You Want to Be a Linux Developer, Part 1

July 27th, 2007 by Baldy

Five years ago, the only engineering or computer science majors setting their sights on a career in writing software code for an open source company were the most hardcore of computer nerds. That was something done only by the true computer geeks, and it usually required an independent source of income. Experienced programmers knew the gravy train existed at proprietary companies, most of which avoided experimental operating systems that nobody in the business world would ever use. Today, the divergent families of the Linux operating system have changed the software development landscape.

July 26th, 2007 by LinuxChick

NASA’s new SGI Altix system is expected to be installed in August at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility at the Ames Research Center.
