What’s a poor, lonely Linux developer to do? Where are all the good support sites? How am I going to fix that troublesome bug? These are questions that even novice code writers no longer have to ask. The classic view of a lonely, isolated programmer writing code for some obscure open source project in a back room is no longer an accurate view of the work environment in which Linux developers toil. Open source programs have become so mainstream that the boundaries are blurring between proprietary, commercial and public domain software.

On Tuesday, Lina Software released the source code for LINA under the GPL v2. LINA enables Linux binaries to run with native look and feel on Windows, Mac, and Linux, without recompiling. This release, along with the launch of our community website, www.openlina.org, invites developers around the world to participate in the growth of this important technology.
Sounds like a push in the right direction, something that a lot of non users might jump at if made available to new bees. Baldy

Mozilla, on Sept. 19, ditched the ability to run arbitrary script from the Firefox command line, a quick fix for a year-old QuickTime bug that could be used to take over user systems.

Well, that was true, (for about 36 hours) but it didn’t last long!
I wasn’t surprised to see a “fix” for Apples attempt to put an end to the Linux, IPod friendship.

iPod Classic Will Be Supported
As recently reported on Slashdot, Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has added a checksum to the iPod database apparently to restrict non-iTunes products (like Amarok via libgpod) from having the ability to add music. To me this sounds pretty familiar. This is the same thing they did to iTunes 4.5 to make it harder for other apps to read off their DAAP shares, they changed it again in iTunes 7; open source apps are still unable to read iTunes 7 DAAP shares.

Linux users are as evangelical about desktop environments, the all-encompassing graphical user interface software responsible for providing everything from taskbars to office suites, as they are about operating systems. It shouldn’t come as any surprise, then, that the first major release in over five years of the most popular desktop environment available is causing quite a stir. Due to be released on December 11th, KDE 4.0 is bringing exhilarating graphical, usability, and functionality improvements to the Unix-like systems it is designed for—and Windows users will get a taste, too.
Oh, won’t Billy be happy to see KDE running on windows! (hehehehe)

WE ARE LINUX! September 17th 1991 Linus Torvalds uploaded the Linux kernel 0.0.1 to the internet. He made the source code freely available to anyone interested in improving on it. Linux is turning 16 years old this year and boy has it grown up! This site http://linuxday.getnix.com was created as a place where you can personally thank Linus and all of the Linux Kernel developers. You can also take the time to share with the world how and why you started using your Linux based OS. On the 17th of September every year we will be challenging you to take Linux with you into your everyday life. Wear a shirt, slap a sticker on something, wear a hat or button. Hand out Live CD’s with your favorite flavor of Linux on top! Let’s take the time to show the people around us why GNU/Linux is Priceless!

Every time you launch Thunderbird, you are greeted by a generic start page (unless you’ve turned that option off). Most of us don’t pay much attention to it and navigate straight to the Inbox without giving it a second thought. The start screen is just a simple HTML page, which Thunderbird fetches from the address specified in the application’s preferences. Knowing that, you can replace it with something more useful, such as the URL of your Web site or blog — or you can take it a step further and turn the start screen into a tool that can help to manage your ideas, notes, to-do lists, and more.
Nifty! Why didn’t I think of this!!?

Michael Geist – Saturday September 15, 2007: The Canadian Recording Industry Association this week quietly filed documents in the Federal Court of Appeal that will likely shock many in the industry. CRIA, which spent more than 15 years lobbying for the creation of the private copying levy, is now fighting to eliminate the application of [...]

Will Fisher writes “New iPods will no longer be able to work with Linux. iTunes now writes some kind of hash (SHA1, md5?) to the iPod database which new iPods check against. If this check fails then the iPod reports that it contains 0 songs. This appears to be protection against 3rd party applications writing out their own databases. We haven’t found out how to generate our own valid hashes (but we do know the hash includes the database itself, and possibly the iPod serial number), and are looking for help.”

Well Linux users would not pay $600 plus for a slow phone and Apple has decided they are not making enough money from the open source crowd and figures to play nasty with us. Haw there are better places to get legal music and cheaper too! Baldy
