Slackware’s "magic package maker"

November 30th, 2007 by Baldy

Slackware Linux today features a powerful and easy-to-use package management system, but making Slackware packages has not always been straightforward. Now Slackware application developers have a tool for easily making Slackware packages from source code and precompiled binaries. Src2pkg, now in version 1.6, very nearly lives up to its author’s tag of being Slackware’s “magic package maker.”

As we begin to slip into the festive season and things begin winding up for the year, we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to check out some of the best Linux games available.

We are opening nominations for the games to be entered into a poll for the best Linux games available.

The requirements for games to be included are:

- they must run on Linux, without Wine
- they must be completely free

Ontario’s full-day kindergarten plan moving forward

November 28th, 2007 by LinuxChick

The Ontario government has taken its first step in fulfilling an election promise by announcing it will begin offering full-day kindergarten classes in three years.

The government will spend $200 million in 2010 and another $300 million in 2011 to get the project off the ground, Premier Dalton McGuinty said on Tuesday.

Are you kidding me!!? This is just more proof of government stupidity! Spending 500 million on kindergarten!?? 7:30am to 6:00pm! Daycare, that’s all it is. Wouldn’t 500 million dollars would be much better spent on education at a junior or senior high level? Oh no, of course not, these children don’t need daycare!!!

Hence, the ideal backup system is thorough, powerful, automatic, and easy to maintain.

Canada’s coming DMCA will be the worst copyright yet

November 28th, 2007 by Baldy

The Canadian government is about to bring down Canada’s version of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and it promises to be the worst copyright law in the developed world. It will contain an “anti-circumvention” clause that prohibits breaking the locks off your music and movies in order to move them to new devices or watch them after the company that made them goes out of business — and it will follow the US’s disastrous lead with the DMCA in that there will be no exceptions to the ban on circumvention, not even for parody, fair dealing, time shifting, or other legal uses.

Firefox Vulnerable to New QuickTime Exploit

November 28th, 2007 by Baldy

Apple has been presented with yet another security headache by an independent researcher. Krystian Kloskowski has posted a proof-of-concept exploit for a vulnerability in Apple’s QuickTime multimedia software. The researcher said that a successful attack could enable the remote execution of malicious code. The exploit targets a flaw in the way QuickTime handles information for streaming media files. Malformed data could be hidden within a streaming media file to trigger a buffer overflow error, which could allow the attacker to access the system with the privileges of the current user.
