Writers Ready to Walk

November 3rd, 2007 by Baldy

The pens are out to prove just how mighty they are.

The Writers Guild of America announced Friday that, barring a huge change of heart by studio and network honchos over the weekend, Hollywood scribes will start picketing on Monday.

At the request of federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez, who sat in on the last round of talks, a final round of negotiations has been scheduled for Sunday morning.

“This afternoon, the WGAE Council and WGAW Board unanimously voted to call a strike,” the board wrote in an email to its 12,000-some members, referring to both the West and New York-based East guilds. “The Writers Guilds will go on strike Monday, Nov. 5th at 12:01 AM. At that time, all Guild-covered work under the MBA must cease. We will be sending more detailed information over the weekend.”

Okay lets see because all the networks are porting their programs to the internet, they want more money for writing those original programs, that were aired on TV once and they got paid for it. Okay makes sense if you happen to work piecework but to get paid for the same piece of work twice is just wrong somehow. More power to them if they get it, but I think that You Tube and others are going to start to have a field day with the new media that will start to show up due to a strike. Heck I might even get out the camcorder and see if I can get a darn contract. Just kidding folks don’t panic. But if you want to read the rest of the article here is the LINK
have fun and enjoy folks.

Hitting the Open Source Road With a Linux-Powered Driverless Vehicle

November 3rd, 2007 by Baldy

In what may well be one of the most unusual computing tasks performed by the Linux operating system, Terra Soft Solutions integrated its Yellow Dog Linux distribution and the Sony PlayStation 3 to guide a specially designed driverless car competing in the qualifying rounds for the DARPA autonomous vehicle challenge in Victorville, Calif. Integral to the on-board, real-time image processing system, the YDL PS3 rode atop a set of 1U rackmount servers inside the experimental car, dubbed the “Spirit.”
