Indie film producer thanks pirates for downloading his movie

November 16th, 2007 by Baldy

Eric D. Wilkinson, producer of the independent film “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth,” has written a letter to the editor of Releaselog, a site that reviews leaked movies available on P2P networks. He hasn’t written to complain, mind — he wrote in to say how much promotional value the piracy of his movie on P2P has generated, and how that’s turning into real sales for him.

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

Now the big question is will the big studios learn anything from this and move forward into the future? Baldy

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Video game consoles, which are increasingly being used to surf the Internet, aren’t generally equipped with antivirus protection like PCs.

Security vendor Trend Micro Inc. thinks they should be, though. It has launched software for Sony’s Playstation 3 that promises to block malicious Web pages and those dealing in sex, drugs and violence.

Do Your Customers Hate Vista? Rip and Replace with a Twist

November 16th, 2007 by Baldy

Give Vista the heave-ho and turn your customers on to alternatives.
So, you just delivered that new PC to your customer and gave them a quick tour of what’s new and then watched their eyes glaze over with confusion.

After a few seconds, the questions start. Questions that should be easy to answer, but turn out not to be! Where is my start button? Where are my programs? What happened to the Menu in Internet Explorer? Why is the system constantly asking for my permission to do simple things? Why does my system take so long to boot? Now your eyes glaze over, not with confusion, but with frustration and you have to ask yourself: What did I do to deserve this?

November 16th, 2007 by LinuxChick

Hoping it can boost holiday sales, Dell Inc. has enlisted Burt Reynolds, Ice T and other celebrities to help customers raise money to buy products for themselves or others.

Through a new website launching Friday, visitors to www.YoursIsHere.com will be able to create a virtual piggy bank where friends and relatives can donate money for gifts.
