Mepis 7.0 RC Review
Baldy
With the new release of the Mepis 7.0 so close you can taste it, I had to write down a few of my thoughts concerning it. To say that Warren has done it again is a major understatement. Hardware recognized without a hitch and I have some stuff around there that can be a major PITA. The two machines that I installed it on are both wireless connections and different as night and day as far as hardware goes. The first is a older desktop AMD 2800+ with three quarters of a gig of memory and a RT2500 wireless pci card. The second is a Intel 1.3 with a half a gig of memory and one of the dreaded BCM43xx cards. With both machines having been know to be problem children in other distros I use them as guides to the ease of install and use of the distros.
Coming as no surprise both installed without a hitch as normal with Mepis. The first thing that I noticed was the graphics are cleaner, and the second thing is that the speed has increased. And the multimedia works right out of the box You Tube videos, MP3′s, you name it and it works. Is this the best of the releases by Mepis, you bet it is. Is this a distro I would install for my 89 year old mother YES! And yes there are tiny bugs, and I said tiny are they show stoppers? NO! Is this the distro of the future compared to others, most of which cost a arm and a leg, yes it is, and I hope that Warren continues into the future and maybe as folks start to learn that the small distros are a good if not better than the bigger names he will start to get more support for it. So folks mosey over to The Mepis Homepage and grab a copy as the RC version of this is better than a lot of the final releases of others.
