YouTube Auto Play

November 27th, 2007 by Baldy

TubeStop is an extension for Mozilla-based Web browsers that disables the autoplay on YouTube videos. This means that you can open multiple YouTube videos in tabs in the background without them all starting to play at once. TubeStop also disables the autoplay on YouTube videos embedded on non-YouTube.com sites (MySpace, for example).

I use it and I love it, Baldy

November 27th, 2007 by Baldy

Here is a link to a complete article and how-to for Bash scripts the why’s and where for’s of Bash Scripting a must read for the new Linux user and not a bad idea for some of the old hand users to brush up on scripting. Take a look it won’t hurt,Baldy.

Of all of the “how-to” articles that we’ve been bringing to the front page as of late, it seems that the most popular have been the Linux series from our resident guru, Ken Gypen. Many of you have asked for these artilces to be a regular feature here on bit-tech, and we’ve been listening.

Update: More Leopard Problems Plague Apple

November 25th, 2007 by LinuxChick

This is something I never thought I’d hear myself say – or maybe I should say, see myself type – about an Apple operating system: Mac OSX Leopard was released before it was ready. This operating system needed more testing on more systems with more hardware, and especially, more software configurations. The days of Apple computers operating with just the Mac OS and Adobe Photoshop installed, and practically nothing else to speak of, are long gone, and Apple knows this as well as anyone. This operating system was not properly beta tested, and Apple’s customers are paying for it, with lost productivity and inoperative computers.

Online Nicknames Google better than Real?

November 25th, 2007 by Baldy

Here is a article of note for me as I am going through a similar situation in my own life how do you tell folks yes this is me it really is?  A situation that is far from being resolved today, Baldy.

An anonymous reader writes “I was recently laid off, and during several of the interviews looking for a new job as a mid level IT manager, I was asked “So, I can just Google your name and find some of your work?” The answer is “yes”, but searching for my name doesn’t really bring up many results compared to searching for my online nickname which I have been using for about a decade. I am very tempted just to put that nickname on my resume. Is the professional, albeit technical, world ready for this step? Where should I put it? At the top or somewhere in the body?” And the other problem- how hard will it be to get a job when your nickname is something ridiculous. Boy I wish I would have thought of that in 95 ;)

Mepis 7.0 RC Review

November 23rd, 2007 by Baldy

With the new release of the Mepis 7.0 so close you can taste it, I had to write down a few of my thoughts concerning it. To say that Warren has done it again is a major understatement. Hardware recognized without a hitch and I have some stuff around there that can be a major PITA. The two machines that I installed it on are both wireless connections and different as night and day as far as hardware goes. The first is a older desktop AMD 2800+ with three quarters of a gig of memory and a RT2500 wireless pci card. The second is a Intel 1.3 with a half a gig of memory and one of the dreaded BCM43xx cards. With both machines having been know to be problem children in other distros I use them as guides to the ease of install and use of the distros.
Coming as no surprise both installed without a hitch as normal with Mepis. The first thing that I noticed was the graphics are cleaner, and the second thing is that the speed has increased. And the multimedia works right out of the box You Tube videos, MP3′s, you name it and it works. Is this the best of the releases by Mepis, you bet it is. Is this a distro I would install for my 89 year old mother YES! And yes there are tiny bugs, and I said tiny are they show stoppers? NO! Is this the distro of the future compared to others, most of which cost a arm and a leg, yes it is, and I hope that Warren continues into the future and maybe as folks start to learn that the small distros are a good if not better than the bigger names he will start to get more support for it. So folks mosey over to The Mepis Homepage and grab a copy as the RC version of this is better than a lot of the final releases of others.

Mistresses of GW Bush pinup calendar highlights the special interests behind the President

November 23rd, 2007 by Baldy

Veronica sez, “I’m a burlesque performer in NYC and me and a bunch of the girls and NYC photographer Burke Heffner created the calendar ‘The Lovely Mistresses of George W. Bush.’ It’s a beautiful, vintage styled pinup calendar. Each girl represents a special interest group or corporation that has profited from Bush being in power. The calendar is topical, environmentally friendly, and 25% of the profits are going to watchdog organizations that monitor corporate influence over our government.” Link (Thanks, Veronica!) Hey I don’t make this stuff I just post it! Baldy

DirectX 9.0c on Linux with Wine

November 22nd, 2007 by Baldy

Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms. Originally, the names of these APIs all began with Direct, such as Direct3D, DirectDraw, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectSound, and so forth. DirectX, then, was the generic term for all of these Direct-something APIs, and that term became the name of the collection. Over the intervening years, some of these APIs have been deprecated and replaced, so that this naming convention is no longer absolute. In fact, the X has caught on to the point that it has replaced Direct as the common part in the names of new DirectX technologies, including XAct, XInput, and so forth.
