Thou shall not pollute, Vatican decrees

March 11th, 2008 by Baldy

Polluting the environment, and becoming ridiculously wealthy while doing so, are two of the new deadly sins unveiled by the Vatican.

Aiming to update morality for modern times, the Pope’s top lieutenant on matters of sin and penance, Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, promulgated the new list of capital vices over the weekend.

The new list is designed to make the faithful take into account how their lives impact others in a globalized world. It includes:

* “Bioethical” violations such as birth control.
* “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research.
* Drug abuse.
* Polluting the environment.
* Aggravating social injustice by contributing to the widening gap between rich and poor.
* Excessive wealth.
* Creating poverty.

“You offend God not only by stealing, taking the Lord’s name in vain or coveting your neighbour’s wife, but also by wrecking the environment, carrying out morally debatable experiments that manipulate DNA or harm embryos,” Girotti said.

Okay lets get this right now are the old ones still in? Or are the old ones okay as long as you don’t do the new ones and what about the ones that were replaced at the whims of another Pope? Do they get to make a come back now? And just when I thought I had broke all the good ones they come up with new ones. Darn I will never catch up.

March 11th, 2008 by LinuxChick

Consumer electronics are becoming greener, but manufacturers still have a long way to go to eliminate hazardous substances from devices and make them more energy efficient, Greenpeace said.

Hmm…. How shocking!
Guess who didn’t want to play??

Yep, good ol’ Microsoft

Firefox 3 Beta 4 is 5x faster than IE7 and 3x faster than Firefox2

March 11th, 2008 by LinuxChick

The almost-but-not-quite-final beta of Firefox 3 (FF3 beta 4) is now available for download. The most noticeable improvement is speed. In some tests, it’s three times faster than Firefox 2 (meaning the test completes in 1/3 the time), and a whopping five times faster than IE 7:

Linux PCs Discontinued at Wal-Mart Stores

March 11th, 2008 by Baldy

“The $200 Linux PCs discussed earlier last year have been discontinued for sale at Wal-Mart’s physical locations, though they will remain for sale at walmart.com. All this despite the systems repeatedly selling out. From the article, ‘Paul Kim, brand manager for Everex, said selling the gPC online was “significantly more effective” than selling it in stores.”

Yikes could it have been all the returns? Or maybe the total lack of support by the developers? Or maybe the line about selling online is a hint that Walmart wants nothing to do with all the problems in their stores. While the idea was good the concept was not a poor desktop design and from there all downhill. Baldy

Installing Fonts on Linux

March 11th, 2008 by Baldy

One of the things I always enjoy when creating presentations, letters, videos, graphics and other documents is playing with different fonts. Fonts can change a boring text-only presentation or paper into an exciting, stylish, wild or classic experience. Yes, it is very easy to get carried away, but that is part of the fun — trying to achieve the perfect balance between form and function.

(And to think that a gal I know was font hunting the other day for “special” fonts that she could use for certain situations, Baldy)
