Hacker Super Bowl Pits Mac OS Vs. Linux, Vista

March 28th, 2008 by Baldy

It’s the most anticipated matchup in the hacker world: Linux versus Mac OS X versus Vista. Who will get hacked first? That’s what organizers of the CanSecWest security conference hope to discover this week as they give show attendees a shot at hacking into the three laptops they’ve put on display here in Vancouver. The catch? They have to use a brand-new ‘zero day’ attack that nobody has seen before. The prize? US$20,000, plus you get to keep the laptop.

And today the results are in and the loser is….Mac! Now this is rich the fanboys must be doing back flips the OS goes done in a ball of fluff, Baldy

The Best Linux Marketing Tip: Don’t Mention Linux

March 28th, 2008 by Baldy

CostCo’s in-store promotional materials for the Eee PC from Asus barely mention that the sub-notebook runs Linux. That may be a smart move. Here’s why.

Now I really have to disagree with this. Why you ask, I have been watching and for a while helping with the GoS help forum and you know what 60% of the problems are? Why won’t my games run? Or I have some programs I run on my windows computer and they won’t install in this. Starting to see a pattern here yet? The folks that are buying these less expensive systems have one thing in common, they have no clue as to the difference between Windows and Linux and therein lies the problem. The users have to be informed that there is a difference and that no their old favorite programs are not going to run (without using wine or a similar program) on the new machine. Please don’t continue to make the same mistake that GoS made inform new buyers and teach them there are options, don’t just toss Linux at them and say have fun. Baldy
