Code execution vulnerability found in Firefox 3.0

June 19th, 2008 by Baldy

It’s not all about world records for Firefox 3.0.

Just hours after the official release of the latest refresh of Mozilla’s flagship browser, an unnamed researcher has sold a critical code execution vulnerability that puts millions of Firefox3.0 users at risk of PC takeover attacks.

According to a note from TippingPoint’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) , a company that buys exclusive rights to software vulnerability data, the Firefox 3.0 bug also affects earlier versions of Firefox 2.0x.

Technical details are being kept under wraps until Mozilla’s security team ships a patch.

Inner Tuber Picked up by Arsenal Rescue

June 17th, 2008 by Baldy

Okay I don’t care how bad the situation or how stupid the idea is, trust me there is a idiot out there to always say “hey hold my beer and watch this”. It is not like there are more important things for the officials to be doing.

Amid the hard work along the River, rescue teams raced to the Mississippi Sunday evening to haul out a man in an inner-tube.

Right at sunset you can see a man floating near the Village of East Davenport. Someone called police after seeing him, near the I-74 bridge. A rescue boat from the arsenal finall stopped the man and hauled him out of the flood waters.

Witnesses couldn’t believe it.

“I saw this dark shape kind of moving down and I thought that’s a guy in an inner-tube and then he waved and I thought yep, that’s a guy in an innertube. I could pick a lot better place I’d rather go tubin’ than on the Mississippi River in flood stage.” said Tom Barnum while he looked on.

The Rock Island Arsenal and The Moline Fire Departments both launched rescue boats. Police spotters were also staged at the I-74 and Government Bridges.

Eric Cramer, with the Arsenal says the man is in his late 20′s, and may have been drinking.

They allowed him to call a friend to be picked up.

The Coming of the Nerdettes and Linux’s Big Chance

June 17th, 2008 by Baldy

Given the heavy proportion of males in the Linux world, we here at LinuxInsider have trouble resisting any topic that brings females back into the picture. Imagine our glee, then, when we spotted mention of a recent Newsweek article titled “Revenge of the Nerdette”! Indeed, some of us fairly fell off of our pink leatherette chairs. The article, which was published last Monday, argues that it’s increasingly being viewed as possible for women to be both geeky and sexy, and for attractive girls to be good at math and science.

Hey I just happen to know a gal that can out perform most guys when it comes to troubleshooting and computer setup. And I personally see nothing wrong with that concept at all, Baldy

Firefox 3 Ready to Ignite June 17

June 13th, 2008 by Baldy

A new version of the Firefox Web browser is scheduled for release Tuesday with improvements in security, speed and design. Many of the enhancements in Firefox 3 involve bookmarks. The new version lets Web surfers add keywords, or tags, to sort bookmarks by topic. A new “Places” feature lets users quickly access sites they recently bookmarked or tagged and pages they visit frequently but haven’t bookmarked. There’s also a new star button for easily adding sites to your bookmark list — similar to what’s already available on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 browser.

10 top tweaks for Windows Vista

June 12th, 2008 by Baldy

I only do this for someone that has to work on a lot of Vista Systems poor gal. So here it is for her and any one else that might want to attempt to make Vista a usable OS.

Part 1: In nearly two decades of working with and writing about Windows, one lesson I’ve learned above all others is that the best ways to enhance performance and productivity are usually fairly simple. They don’t require registry edits or custom code; instead, they involve learning how the basic building blocks of Windows work, and then rearranging those components to cut steps out of the tasks you perform most often.

Vista changed some of those building blocks, and many people are struggling because they’re trying to use the new tools with the old techniques.

Microsoft Taking Petitions to Keep XP Alive

June 9th, 2008 by Baldy

If you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough people asked for it. After all, many people don’t want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those “non-official complaints” and the rest of us simply consider them silly.

Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams (and then on to Neowin) that they are to begin logging any calls that come in for the sole purpose of requesting an extension to the retail life of Windows XP. The calls will be logged and, if enough complaints are filed, Microsoft will consider giving XP some more time (no pinky promises, though).

If you wish to file an official petition yourself, you can simply call the Windows XP Home Edition support numbers for your country and let the operator know that you wish to file an official complaint.
