The Government of Canada has angered those who believe that a proposed copyright law threatens the country’s open source business model. Russell McOrmond, a member of the Canadian Software Innovation Alliance (CSIA), says that Bill C-61, the proposed copyright legislation unveiled by the government last month, ignores just about every recommendation made by CSIA, a coalition of open source businesses and supporters, in a white paper.

For those of you using ZoneAlarm who installed the windows updates
today, you probably already know that your internet connection has
died. It appears that KB951748 made changes to the networking files
that ZA doesn’t see/recognize.
After two hours of messing
around, I found an inelegant solution that will work temporarily …
set the Internet Zone Security permission slider from high to medium. The connection will be restored.
I
discovered this after I finally figured out ZA was blocking my internet
connections, and turned it off. Once everything worked again as normal,
I started playing around and hit on this lowered permission setting.
I imagine the ZA forum will be full of better solutions, but thought this would get you back up and running in the short term.
Another fine kettle of fish brought to you by Billyware! And yes it is a bug that really is a pain in the rump.

July 7, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. today said that it would begin pushing Windows XP Service Pack 3 to most users “shortly.”
The announcement, made by Nick MacKechnie, a senior manager for Microsoft’s New Zealand operations, was not unexpected, since the company had previously said that it would release Windows XP SP3 to Automatic Updates sometime in the “early summer.”
“We would like to remind you that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) will be released to Automatic Updates shortly,” said MacKechnie in a post to a company blog Monday.
Individuals or companies that want to block the automatic deployment of Windows XP SP3 can download and use the Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool Kit, which provides the means for stopping the service pack from reaching client PCs through April 2009.

Why doesn’t free trump expensive? Every Microsoft product has a free, open source counterpart created by dedicated programmers who loathe everything the company stands for. The free stuff is darn good. Yet companies and individuals continue to buy billions of dollars worth of Microsoft products. To be fair, Microsoft software is sometimes better than the competition’s. But quality isn’t the only factor: The company has spent years digging moats around its castle, building digital walls to keep other vendors out and users in.

Well, the Fourth of July is just a few days away, and all good citizens of the nation we call America must naturally be thinking of the birth of this great land. Not content to be just great, our founding fathers wanted independence as well, and that value is still held dear today. Indeed, one might argue that there are few areas of society today in which that’s more true than the open source community. After all, what is Linux if not a technology that enables independence — from Microsoft or any other proprietary technological world?
You know I had to do it, don’t you? Baldy

Canada Day formerly Dominion Day, is Canada’s national day, a federal statutory holiday, celebrated on July 1 annually by all Canadians. Canada Day observances take place not only throughout the nation, but also internationally.
Frequently referred to as “Canada’s birthday”, particularly in the popular press,[1][2][3] the occasion marks the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867.
I guess while hanging around up north I really learned something. Ha and they say it is imposssible to teach a old dog new tricks. Any way Happy Birthday Canada
