Novell distinguished engineer James Bottomley believes Linux desktop environments need a dose of open source ingenuity rather than ape ideas from Windows and OS X. Bottomley, who also wears the hat of Director of the Linux Foundation and chair of its technical advisory board, says the next challenge for Linux as a whole is to take the lead in interface advancements. He described his position today in an interview with Brian Proffitt on the Linux Foundation blog.
Oh oh the voice of common sense and adventure rears its head. Yes this is one that I agree with to the max the heck with Linux can do that just like windows to hey this is something that windows can not do! What a concept folks. Baldy

A laptop computer that burst into flames after being left on a couch is to blame for a Vancouver man’s death, prompting a public warning from the British Columbia Coroners Service not to leave the devices on soft furniture.
The 56-year-old man became the first British Columbian to die from a laptop fire earlier this year, when he plugged the device in and left it running on his sofa. The laptop caught fire 50 minutes later and his residence was soon engulfed.
Okay let me see if I have this right plug in laptop walk off and burn to death!
To tell the truth there is only one person I know that lets a laptop sit on furniture for a while and that one has never burst into flame. Baldy

Microsoft for the first time has named Linux distributors Red Hat and Canonical as competitors to its Windows client business in its annual filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
In its annual Form 10-K report for the fiscal year ended June 30, Microsoft cited Red Hat and Canonical — the latter of which maintains the Ubuntu Linux distribution — as competitors to its client business, which includes the desktop version of its Windows OS.
Previously, Microsoft had only noted competition from Red Hat to its Server and Tools business, which includes the Windows Server version of the OS for server hardware, in its 10-K reports.
“Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market,” Microsoft said in the filing. “Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat.”
“Microsoft would like the netbook to go away and be replaced by lightweight laptops — ones with long battery life that cost enough to justify running full Windows on them,” he said.
Helm added that Microsoft is trying to discourage the production of inexpensive computers where Windows becomes the most expensive component because it can’t make as much money on Windows on these devices, and they could drive down the price of Windows. (:tisk:)

KDE 4.3.0 is out, and it is a great release. It is unlikely that any one specific thing will strike the user as the most noticeable improvement; rather, the overall user experience of KDE has improved greatly in KDE 4.3.0. The release’s codename, Caizen, is a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement throughout all aspects of life. That has been the goal of the KDE team for 4.3.0: polish, polish, polish. The statistics from the bug tracker speak for themselves: 10,000 bugs have been fixed. In addition, close to 63,000 changes were checked in by a little under 700 contributors. That is not to say that the KDE team did not add a large number of new features: 2000 feature requests were implemented in the past 6 months, meaning that any user’s pet feature might well be among the improvements KDE 4.3.0 brings.
Well so far not a bad point has emerged and it seems as if the growing pains have finally subsided. Even Dolphin has more features, (it is still no Konq, but it is really trying, Baldy

Okay as anyone who loves Mepis knows there is a huge amount of wants and desires and lets not forget the rumors that abound from the Forums to websites. They all seem to have most of the same things mentioned. KDE4 is the biggest thing, while it is available from other sources it has not as of yet made it into the Mepis Repositories.
Another matter of not a slight bit of conversation is the fact that Warren has made the comment, “I think it will need a minimum of 800-850 MB”, well that means that the next Mepis will require a dvd burner to burn and install. Well one or two of the Mepis regulars are thinking of a script to allow those who don’t have a dvd burner to install it from the HD.
So it seems that later this summer Mepis 8,5 will be released, and as normal Warren will release a distro that just plain works, no matter what it’s size, or the packages that are included. So keep tuned and hang on to your socks it is coming and slowly more news will be released.
