Learning the shell

February 5th, 2008 by Baldy

Why bother?

Why do you need to learn the command line anyway? Well, let me tell you a story. Not long ago we had a problem where I used to work. There was a shared drive on one of our file servers that kept getting full. I won’t mention that this legacy operating system did not support user quotas; that’s another story. But the server kept getting full and stopping people from working. One of the software engineers in our company spent the better part of a day writing a C++ program that would look through the directories of all the users and add up the space they were using and make a listing of the results. Since I was forced to use the legacy OS while I was on the job, I installed a version of the bash shell that works on it. When I heard about the problem, I realized I could do all the work this engineer had done with this single line:

du -s * | sort -nr > $HOME/space_report.txt

Dead spy satellite falling from orbit – could hit Earth in late February or March

January 27th, 2008 by Baldy

You’d hope contingency plans were in place. Wouldn’t you.

And heck I was worried about dying from old age, First a plane parts fall from the skies and kill some poor customer in a car dealership and now spy satellites are falling when will all the falling stop. Maybe Chicken Little was right after all. Baldy

Examining the One Laptop Per Child XOs

January 25th, 2008 by LinuxChick

I have been asked to review the XO computers from the One Laptop Per Child project. This is the first in a series of blog posts about my experiences, as well as those of some children with whom I will be working. I could easily gush over it or complain about how small the keyboard is in a single article, but I think the XO requires a more in-depth review than that. So I hope you’ll join me as I explore these interesting tools aimed at children.

Mike Huckabee congratulates Canada on its "national igloo"

January 5th, 2008 by Baldy

Mike Huckabee may have won the Iowa primary, but does he really think that Canada’s Parliament resides in a “national igloo?” Rick Mercer’s comedic Canadian TV show “Talking to Americans” (asking people on the streets of US cities nonsensical questions about Canada to see if they call shenanigans or whether they become genuinely alarmed at the idea that, say, the Canadian elderly are set adrift on ice floes instead of being sent to retirement homes) caught Huckabee on video during his days as governor of Arkansas and asked him to send a message of support to Canada and its struggling “national igloo,” a notional ice-sculpture scale replica of the White House in which the Canadian Parliament meets and debates.

Huckabee gave a stirring endorsement to the igloo, presumably after ascertaining that the igloo was not used by homosexuals. Link

And this guy wants to be President?? Another reason I love Rick Mercer,Baldy

Unusual Data Disaster Horror Stories

December 7th, 2007 by Baldy

I found this over on Slashdot and just had to post it, after all I thought that I had some the wackiest customers in the world, guess I was wrong, Baldy

Lucas123 writes “Computerworld has posted stories from a disaster recovery company that include a scientist who drilled into his hard drive in order to pour oil into the mechanism to stop the squeaking. It worked. Of course a dead drive makes no noise. And, then a guy in Thailand who, after discovering ants in his external hard drive, took the cover off in order to spray the interior with insect repellent. Both the ants and the drive died.”

Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Cult Watch 2007: Who’s Drinking the Kool-Aid?

December 2nd, 2007 by LinuxChick

As we wind down another year in technology, it’s a good time to check in on the cults and see how they’re doing.

For companies who inspire them, user cults are nice because they motivate customers to overlook strategic blunders, exaggerate product successes and — most importantly — walk the earth “virally” marketing products without pay.

I’m not sure I agree with Mike’s opinion regarding the “Linux Cult”.. but still a good read.
