SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Review

May 26th, 2010 by Baldy

The last time I looked at SimplyMEPIS was the 8.0 release. In this review I’ll be taking a look at the latest version, SimplyMEPIS Linux 8.5.

A review worth checking out, but then I am a tad jaded towards Mepis to start, Baldy LOL

Mepis Update

August 1st, 2009 by Baldy

Okay as anyone who loves Mepis knows there is a huge amount of wants and desires and lets not forget the rumors that abound from the Forums to websites. They all seem to have most of the same things mentioned. KDE4 is the biggest thing, while it is available from other sources it has not as of yet made it into the Mepis Repositories.

Another matter of not a slight bit of conversation is the fact that Warren has made the comment, “I think it will need a minimum of 800-850 MB”, well that means that the next Mepis will require a dvd burner to burn and install. Well one or two of the Mepis regulars are thinking of a script to allow those who don’t have a dvd burner to install it from the HD.

So it seems that later this summer Mepis 8,5 will be released, and as normal Warren will release a distro that just plain works, no matter what it’s size, or the packages that are included. So keep tuned and hang on to your socks it is coming and slowly more news will be released.

SimplyMEPIS 8.0 RC3: Entering the “Waiting for Lenny” Phase

February 9th, 2009 by Baldy

Morgantown, WV, Feb 9, 2009 — MEPIS has distributed ISO files for RC3 of SimplyMEPIS 8.0. The files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.96-rc3_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.96-rc3_64.iso.

For RC3, the kernel has been updated to upstream version, 2.6.27.15. Qemu 0.9.1+svn, libvirt 0.6., virt-manager 0.6.1, and virtinst 0.400.1 are available from the MEPIS pool to better match the virtualization configuration of the MEPIS kernel. At user requests, firefox 3.0.6-1, openoffice 3.0.0-5, and libgphoto2 2.4.3-1 updates were added to the SimplyMEPIS build. Community members have improved the MEPIS Network Assistant, the MEPIS Manual and they have added an autorun Intro to MEPIS to the CD.

When will SimplyMEPIS be released? MEPIS developer, Warren Woodford, says, “MEPIS 8.0 is in good shape but since MEPIS is meant to have a Debian Stable core, I’d prefer to wait and declare it final when Debian Lenny is released.”

SimplyMEPIS 8.0 RC2: On the Home Stretch

January 26th, 2009 by Baldy

Morgantown, WV, Jan 26, 2009 — Warren has uploaded ISO files for RC2 of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 to the MEPIS pools. The files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.95-rc2_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.95-rc2_64.iso.

For RC2, the kernel has been updated to upstream version, 2.6.27.12. Kvm 83 is available from the MEPIS pool to better match the virtualization configuration of the MEPIS kernel. Grub has been updated to fix a “stage 2″ error that was encountered in some rare circumstances. The MEPIS Assistants were updated to work with virtio drivers. Bind9 was updated to 9.6.0-P1 to support NSEC3 for DNSsec.

SimplyMEPIS developer, Warren Woodford, reports, “I apologize to anyone who was expecting 8.0 to be final by now. It’s taking longer than I had hoped but I think we are very close to a final release. MEPIS is based on Debian Stable and our delays also gives time for Lenny to become final. The changes from the developers at Debian have been coming very quickly. At this rate they will finish Lenny soon.”

ISO images of new MEPIS pre-releases are published to the ‘testing’ subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber’s Site and at MEPIS public mirrors. To support the ongoing development of MEPIS, community users are encouraged to go to the MEPIS store at http://www.mepis.org and become MEPIS subscribers.

Interview with Warren Woodford – Founder of Mepis

December 15th, 2008 by Baldy

Okay here is your chance to check out the man behind Mepis my favorite distro and one that I try and promote as much as possible. Learn why he started Mepis and some of his belief’s for a distro. A very good read for all as it gives a lot of insight into a developer of a linux distro, and his opinion of Ubuntu and it’s creator Mark Shuttleworth. Not to mention GPL and other linux news that has surfaced from time to time.

SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Moves Closer to Final Release with Beta 6

December 9th, 2008 by Baldy

Morgantown, WV, Dec 8, 2008 — ISO files of the sixth and last anticipated beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 are available for 32 and 64 bit processors as SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.93-beta6_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.93-beta6_64.iso.

In beta 6, the kernel has been updated to upstream version 2.6.27.7 and the extra drivers have been rebuilt for the new kernel. This kernel release fixes an error in the last release that resulted in the tg3 driver being disabled.

An ‘Alternate’ CD boot selection has been added in response to feedback that this provides a workaround for a problem that some users have had when trying to boot from CD.

Flash has been updated to version 10 and there have been several updates to the MEPIS Assistant apps in response to suggestions from the community.

Warren Woodford, the integrator of SimplyMEPIS, reports, “Progress on 8.0 has been slow but steady. The community has done a great job of reporting problems and suggesting fixes! There are just a few issues remaining. I hope that in a week or two we can have an RC release.”

Nowadays, everyone uses Ubuntu, most people have used Fedora, and many folks have tried openSUSE. SimplyMEPIS … not so many. That’s a shame, because this relatively obscure Debian-based desktop distribution from Morgantown, WV, is an outstanding desktop operating system. With SimplyMEPIS 8 at beta 5 and closing in on release, I tested the distribution and found it to be a keeper.

MEPIS jumps on 2.6.27

October 21st, 2008 by Baldy

Only ten days after the release of Linux 2.6.27, the SimplyMEPIS project has decided to work the new kernel into its next release. The project today used the kernel in both 32- and 64-bit versions of the third beta release of SimplyMEPIS 8.

And this after all the “experts” said that Mepis was dead. Like I said then just wait the release is going to blow your socks off, Baldy

Simply Mepis 8 is Looking Good

October 1st, 2008 by Baldy

As some of you know, Linux is what my computers run on, and Simply Mepis is the particular distribution. I have been using Simply Mepis for a number of years, and would not go backwards into a Windows environment for anything. There is no need to, really, as all my computing needs are met in Linux: safe, secure, virus free, and easy to use. For more on Linux, you can read my post Linux – Is It For You?

Yikes and yet another person with Mepis on the mind. Could it be that Mepis is the best kept secret in the Linux World? Naw just a lot of folks that run linux want a good system that just Simply Works, Simply Mepis.
