A new version of MEPIS Linux, one of my favorite KDE-based distributions, is nearing final release. Roughly a year after the arrival of version 7.0, distribution founder and maintainer Warren Woodford has released MEPIS 8.0 beta 2, based on a Debian Lenny core.
All I can say is I agree with this review. I also am not a fan of the default scheme but it is really nice to see as a step forward in the graphics area. Take a look and check out this fine review, Baldy

First let me state that in no way do I represent Mepis or Warren in any way shape or form, with that said. Is Mepis going away? No, the releases have been slow do a thing called work and unless Warren does that he has a problem paying bills eating and stuff like that. So he gets a pass on that or he should. If I remember there was mention of a release towards the end of this month, and from what has been said there could be alphas showing up around that time period. So folks don’t panic Warren puts out a great distro that is both easy for the noob and a breeze to tweak for the more jaded users. Take a look at Unbuntu yes they release 4 times a year and when you visit the forums the one line you see a lot is” darn this or that worked fine in Mepis” , getting a clue here yet folks, a little patience and what you get is a easy to install, upgrade, and use distro that is popular no matter what DistroWatch ranks it at. So hang in there folks stop the needless whining and the new Mepis will be out before you know it.

For my money, the best desktop operating system is Linux — MEPIS and OpenSUSE at the top with Ubuntu closing in fast, to be exact. But everyone has their own opinion, and over at PC Magazine some old friends and coworkers of mine decided to compare all the most popular desktop operating systems: Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS X 10.5.1 (Leopard), and Ubuntu 7.10.
PC Magazine’s OS Wars article was well done and had some interesting results, but I have some thoughts of my own on some of its calls.
First, while Ubuntu does have a clear win in one category — price, of course — there are others where I would have given it higher marks. In the category of installation, the PC Mag staffers had Ubuntu tied with XP at the bottom of the barrel. I would put Vista below both of them. Even with Service Pack 1, Vista installation remains a pain.

Ok, I have to admit it sometime, so now is as good a time as any…. Yea, I did it, I’ve got a new laptop coming and yes, it’s got Vista…. I’ve been getting a lot of calls for private tutoring, most of these people are running Vista, despite me telling everyone I see NOT to buy it! I can’t very well sit down with someone and their new Vista computer and have no idea where to start, so I sucked it up last night and ordered one.
Now, you KNOW I’m not going to have a new computer and NOT have some sort of Linux installed on it. Thus began my search for information on dual booting Vista & Linux. This in turn brings me to post this article. (and use my favorite Tux image)
What I came across was a dual boot setup of Vista & Mepis, perfect because that’s what I wanted to use anyway. I can’t to say I’m surprised by what I read in this article by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over on Desktop Linux, but I can say I’m very pleased!!!
Put side-by-side on the same machine, Mepis (and linux in general) kicks Vista’s butt!!! I know it’s not a big shocker, but still really nice to see! Read it for yourself. In particular the Hardware Wars.

The long awaited SimplyMEPIS 7.0 was finally released just before Christmas, and it was worth the wait. In this mature and sometimes underrated operating system, everything looks good and works well.

With the new release of the Mepis 7.0 so close you can taste it, I had to write down a few of my thoughts concerning it. To say that Warren has done it again is a major understatement. Hardware recognized without a hitch and I have some stuff around there that can be a major PITA. The two machines that I installed it on are both wireless connections and different as night and day as far as hardware goes. The first is a older desktop AMD 2800+ with three quarters of a gig of memory and a RT2500 wireless pci card. The second is a Intel 1.3 with a half a gig of memory and one of the dreaded BCM43xx cards. With both machines having been know to be problem children in other distros I use them as guides to the ease of install and use of the distros.
Coming as no surprise both installed without a hitch as normal with Mepis. The first thing that I noticed was the graphics are cleaner, and the second thing is that the speed has increased. And the multimedia works right out of the box You Tube videos, MP3′s, you name it and it works. Is this the best of the releases by Mepis, you bet it is. Is this a distro I would install for my 89 year old mother YES! And yes there are tiny bugs, and I said tiny are they show stoppers? NO! Is this the distro of the future compared to others, most of which cost a arm and a leg, yes it is, and I hope that Warren continues into the future and maybe as folks start to learn that the small distros are a good if not better than the bigger names he will start to get more support for it. So folks mosey over to The Mepis Homepage and grab a copy as the RC version of this is better than a lot of the final releases of others.

Users of the popular Linux distribution MEPIS were getting worried about the distribution’s leader, who had been rather quiet lately.
Some Linux distributions — Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Novell, for example — have thousands of people working on them over the course of a month. Others, like MEPIS, have one developer, and users of the popular Linux desktop distribution were getting worried when Warren Woodford, MEPIS’s CEO, had been laying low for the last month.
After sitting and watching some of the comments over on Mepislovers forums this should bring to rest the health rumors of Warren. However like the article says it is a sad state of affairs when the developer of a Distro had to find work to pay the bills. Another case of if you like it donate to it folks, it is the only way that free and open source projects will survive in the future. Baldy
