Not Having Linux Skills is IT Malpractice

August 5th, 2010 by Baldy

Some things seem so obvious I feel silly even saying them. And this is one of them: any IT staffer who only knows one operating system is not worth hiring. We see the silly Microsoft vs. Linux vs. Apple stories every day, with Ten Reasons Why This One is Better, and 7 Reasons Why That One Sucks, and Five Ways to Make Headlines With Lists. The ones that crack me up are the “10 Scary Hurdles to Migrating to Linux.” Ever notice how every single time they mention “You’ll need Linux skills!” Oh dear, no! Linux skills? Well there’s a dealbreaker! Because it is completely unreasonable to expect your current batch of delicate Windows admins to have any Linux skills. Sigh.

What can I say other than yup! Baldy

Use your Android Phone as a Wireless Hotspot (Rooted Phones Only)

July 31st, 2010 by Baldy

We have recently covered how to use your Android phone to access the internet on your computer. This process is known as tethering. By connecting your phone, via a USB cable, to your computer you are able to use the phone’s data connection to browse the web on your computer. In places where there aren’t any wireless hotspots, tethering is incredibly useful.

Yikes I guess I was ahead of the curve I used this months ago but it is neat use of a phone but watch the battery they go fast, Baldy

Cisco Destroys Linksys RV082 with Upgrade

May 2nd, 2010 by Baldy

Linksys used to be a great company before Cisco bought it. I have a Linksys RV082. A couple of months ago Cisco released a firmware “upgrade” that has made the router barely usable. Version 2.0.0.19tm is poison. If you are running an earlier version – DON’T UPGRADE. Once you upgrade you can’t go back to an earlier version.

After upgrading, web access is very slow. If a page has multiple images on it many of the images don’t load. However if the RV082 is removed and I connect directly to the cable modem it works normally. I have been hoping that Cisco would fix the problem but so far nothing.

This I think is an example of what happens sometimes when a big company buys up a good smaller company and then manages to destroy it through stupidity. Linksys has really gone downhill and I’m just not going to buy any more of their products. I’m now looking to replace my broken dual wan router with something that actually works. Cisco sucks.

IT Strangled by Overspecialization

April 14th, 2010 by Baldy

What happened to the old “sysadmin” of just a few years ago? We’ve split what used to be the sysadmin into application teams, server teams, storage teams, and network teams. Now look at what we’ve done — knowledge is so decentralized we must invent new roles to act as liaisons between all the IT groups.

Now this I personally have first hand experience the old idea of one admin to rule them all is now a part of history as much as windows 3.1, Baldy

Google May Engage Android to Flatten the iPad

April 13th, 2010 by Baldy

Apple’s newly launched iPad may be taking up the majority of consumer mindshare in the tablet category following its launch earlier this month, but Google is furtively working on a device of its own that will be powered exclusively by Android. That’s according to reports of comments made by Google CEO Eric Schmidt at a recent Los Angeles party. Google has been experimenting in stealth mode to explore content delivery options on a tablet device, according to New York Times sources who declined to be named.

Humm looks like Google has decided to chase the Mac Boys for a while, Baldy

YouTube, Vimeo Ditching Flash for HTML5

January 23rd, 2010 by Baldy

YouTube and Vimeo is kicking Adobe’s Flash to the curb in favor of the sharp new HTML5. Both YouTube and Vimeo have announced that they are launching HTML5-based players on their video streaming sites, thus booting out the long-standing champ of multimedia delivery, Adobe Flash. With recent security issues plaguing Adobe products, it’s no surprise that media giants such as YouTube are jumping ship. What makes HTML5 special is that the new Web standard doesn’t require Adobe’s software to stream content to viewers.

Ouch does this mean the slide of Flash in everyday use? Baldy

Email Failure

December 11th, 2009 by Baldy

Heck we made it through a darn blizzard and mediacom is having major problems as there has been no email for over 30 hours and when you call them you get a nice message saying we have a problem with the email and are working on it and hope to have it repaired soon! Hell my clients would have dumped me if I couldn’t resolve a mail problem, and I know they have a lot more help than me.Thanks Mediacom keep up the fine work
